Loft Room

Fast Turnaround, Budget Project

My client wanted a quick turnaround project, as they were taking 11 Ukrainian Refugees (four women and seven children) into their home and needed to convert their current empty loft space into a lounge/study area as quickly as possible. With such a tight schedule, everything would have to be off-the-shelf or have a very short delivery time.

I spent a couple of days planning the space and decided to divide the room into separate zones using a room divider. This would create a division between the lounge and study area, while also allowing light through to create storage solutions.  The room already had a beautiful Jessica Zoob wallpaper that I had chosen several years previously, so I used the accent colours from the wallpaper to style the room.

I contacted a local sofa company to see what they had in stock and, after a trip to their showroom, I found a grey leather corner sofa the exact shape I needed. After explaining what it was being used for, I managed to get a substantial discount and it could be delivered within a few days – perfect. Next up was a one-stop-shop to IKEA for the desks, room divider, storage solutions and various other accessories. I managed to rope in a friend’s help with a van large enough for everything and, after promising him IKEA meatballs for lunch, he agreed to help. After a day of trying to find various items, running around the warehouse section pushing trollies with wonky wheels, we finally left with a fully loaded van.

Over the next few days we assembled flat-pack furniture, moved existing lighting, put up shelves and added in plants, lighting, and accessories. We had a fridge and a microwave delivered and created a small area to prepare food and drinks. After a hectic nine days, both my client and I were very happy with the finished room. I hope the new house guests enjoy the space I created for them.
